Taiwan’s President Rejects China’s Call for Reunification

President Xi Jinping said Taiwan’s reunification was necessary ‘for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese people’ and refused to rule out using military force against separatist movements.

However, Taiwan’s president 蔡英文 Tsai Ing-wen said on Wednesday (Jan 2) that the island will not accept a “one country, two systems” political arrangement with China, while stressing that all cross-strait negotiations need to be on a government-to-government basis.

“The vast majority in Taiwan resolutely oppose ‘one country, two systems’. This is the ‘Taiwan consensus’,” she told reporters during a news conference at the Presidential Palace in Taipei.
